| Gary Wellington appearing in the centres for Burdekin's Foley Shield final team in 1963. After playing superbly for North Queensland, he represented Queensland against New South Wales four times in 1965 and repeated the feat in 1966 from Herbert River. His 1965 form was rewarded with a tour of New Zealand with the Australian team later that year, where he played in three tour matches. | Wellington played in the 1966 North Queensland team which upset the touring Great Britain team 17-15 at the Townsville Sports Reserve. After the match against the tourists, continuing good form saw Wellington selected to play alongside fellow North Queenslanders Angelo Crema, Ray Laird and Jim Paterson in the Queensland team to again play the Brits. |
