Billy Slater played his junior football for Innisfail Brothers. After playing with Brisbane Norths during 2001 and 2002 he was given a start with the Melbourne Storm in 2003.
Slater was chosen on the wing in the Queensland State of Origin side in 2004 scoring an amazing "chip and chase" try. He was also chosen in Australia's Tri Nation squad. In 2005 Billy Slater was chosen at fullback for Queensland.

After spending some time in the representative wilderness Slater again represented Queensland and Australia in 2008 and became a fixture at fullback in both teams. Up to the end of 2011 Slater had appeared in 17 State of Origin matches for Queensland and represented Australia 17 times.
