After going within an ace of taking Tully to the grand final and representing North Queensland, Laird returned to Railways. In 1970 Ray Laird's football talent was finally recognised at the highest level, when, after representing his State over an eight year period, he was chosen as the Australian fullback for the second Test against Great Britain. After contemplating retirement Laird moved to Nambour and continued his career with Souths, gaining the rare distinction of having represented Toowoomba, North Queensland, Central Queensland and Wide Bay.
