| Stan Gorton, a Cairns junior, graduated to the senior side in 1963 and quickly established himself as a formidable attacking player with speed to burn. At the end of the season Sydney club St. George visited Cairns for a friendly match and one of the features of the day was a sprint race which saw the best pacemen from the Saints up against the local talent. |
Gorton showed the opposition a clean pair of heels, immediately attracting the
interest of the southern club's officials. He moved to the famous club and earned a
reputation for his blistering runs on the flank. Gorton topped the try scoring list for the
Sydney competition in 1968, taking his solid frame across the line 22 times.
