Brian Fitzsimmons was a product of the Mareeba club playing in the Minor Junior ranks in 1956 and 1957. He joined Cairns Brothers club in 1958 and played his first Foley Shield match in 1961. In 1963 Fitzsimmons made his debut for North Queensland from Brothers and then moved to Babinda to claim a Foley Shield crown under Ron Tait. In his second season with Babinda, Fitzsimmons played his first game for Queensland. He moved back to Cairns Brothers for the 1966 season and continued a string of appearances in the Maroon jersey that lasted until 1971. In 1967 he was appointed coach of the Burdekin Foley Shield side but representative duties, including a Test match against New Zealand prevented him from continuing in the coaching role. |

After moving to the Brothers club in Gladstone in 1969, Fitzsimmons again played for the Maroons. He played two more Tests for Australia, against Great Britain in 1970 and New Zealand in 1971. Fitzsimmons played his last match for Queensland in 1971, after wearing the Maroon jersey on more than twenty occasions. He continued his career with Brisbane Brothers, retiring from playing after the 1974 season.
