Greg Dowling played for Queensland Country Rugby Union in 1977 with Townsville team-
mate and Wallaby winger Peter Grigg, but his League ability soon saw him concentrate on
the game in which he became a household name. In 1979 Dowling was in the North
Queensland squad for the match against Great Britain in Mackay. The following year he
moved to Innisfail Brothers and was rewarded with North Queensland, Queensland
Country and Queensland representation. 1981 saw Dowling join Brisbane club Wynnum-
Manly. He was again chosen to wear the Maroon jersey against New South Wales. A
broken leg late in the season saw Dowling on the sideline for much of 1982. He returned to
the field late in the season and, after just one match for Wynnum, his perseverance in
overcoming his injury was rewarded with a spot on the Queensland tour of England.

Dowling played his first State of Origin match for Queensland in the Maroon's memorable
clean sweep of New South Wales in 1983. It was also the year he made his Australian
debut when he appeared in the First Test against Great Britain in Sydney. Dowling played
in all three clashes with the visitors, starting an international career which saw him play 12
Test matches for Australia. Dowling continued playing for Queensland in the State of
Origin matches until 1987, when he had switched to Brisbane Norths for the season. After
making 11 Origin appearances Dowling joined the fledgling Brisbane Broncos in 1988,
playing over 60 matches for them before his playing career ended in 1991.
