Angelo Crema made an indelible mark on rugby league in Tully and North Queensland. Under the early guidance of Sydney sprinter and Tully coach, Reg Austin, Crema quickly showed his talent. In 1960 Crema played for Far North Queensland in the match against the touring French team. The next season he played for North Queensland with Dan Clifford. In 1963, after playing for North Queensland against the Kiwis, Angelo Crema played for Queensland in the third interstate match against New South Wales. In the same year he was a member of Tully's Foley Shield winning team under captain-coach and former Australian five-eighth Bobby Banks. He again wore the Maroon of Queensland the following year, after he and Dan Clifford played starring roles in North Queensland's 35-21 demolition of France.

In 1964 Crema played in all four interstate games as well as the Maroons' win over the French. After playing in the all-conquering North Queensland team in 1965, Crema's talent was recognised at the highest level in 1966 with his selection in the Australian team for the first Test against Great Britain. He then played for Queensland alongside fellow North Queenslanders Ray Laird, Ray Miguel, Jim Paterson, Eric Gelling and Gary Wellington, scoring three tries against the Poms. Crema continued to represent North Queensland and Queensland in 1967 and 1968 when he again wore the Maroon jersey against Great Britain.
